SECURITY CAMERAS

With many suburbs experiencing an increase in break-ins and intruders, it’s more important than ever to secure your home or business premises and keep your property safe. Security cameras are one option that works both as a deterrent and as a way of catching anyone who attempts to come onto your premises.

Choosing your security camera features

Camera Resolution – the level of detail you need in your footage will help you decide between the 2-4 megapixels 6-8 megapixels camera option. If you need clarity or zooming ability or need to see numbers or cash, you’ll need a higher resolution. A higher resolution is best in a commercial setting, while a lower resolution may be all you need for a residential setting.

Fixed lens or varifocal lens – a varifocal allows you to zoom in on a set area, changing from digital to motorized zoom so you can focus. A fixed lens shows a single static view, without the ability to zoom in for a closer view or detail.

Night vision – if your cameras are primarily used for nighttime security, you need to choose an option that offers the detail you need. Infrared (IR) offers a limited range and only black and white footage, while low-level light filter cameras will allow you to see colours, such as the colour of a car or shirt.

Feature Detection – modern cameras offer a range of specialised features which utilise AI to capture events. Instead of simply being alerted to a movement, there are now features such as tripwire, which allows you to receive alerts when items in the room are approached, or when a certain virtual line is passed.

Wired or wireless – wireless cameras require batteries, and may have connectivity issues from time to time. If you want to ensure you don’t miss out on any vital footage, wired cameras are the more reliable option.

Common Security Camera Designs

There are four common designs you can choose from when selecting a security camera. Although all of them are useful, each has benefits that are more beneficial in different situations.

Turret – commonly used for residential premises, the lack of a dome shell reduces camera glare, making them a good option for outdoor and daytime use. Another added benefit is the easy adjustment angle.

Dome – Primarily used indoors, dome cameras feature a round protective cover, meaning outside observers can’t tell which way the camera is facing. The covers also provide good protection against vandalism and damage.

Bullet – commonly used in factories and workplaces, bullet cameras feature a dominating cylinder-shaped appearance and are designed to clearly indicate that security cameras are watching the premises.

Fisheye – with an ultra-wide angle lens, the image from a fisheye lens is hemispherical or wide panoramic, meaning up to a 360-degree view without blind spots.

Choosing the right security camera for you

While you could buy cameras from a big box store over the counter, having a qualified professional come to your home means peace of mind in the long run. It allows you to discuss your requirements and expectations, and we can arm you with the knowledge of realistic options and pricing.

It’s important to choose a camera that meets your security needs, and also has minimal or no blind spots. Our trained professionals can assist with choosing the right camera for you and installing hardwired cameras onto your premises.
